Instead of a ticket, a hug and a helmet from Danish police.

Hug the PoliceMost of the time, when you see the words YouTube, police and bicyclists in the same sentence, it does not end well. Now imagine if that cop had hugged the guy. Absurd, I know, except the Danes are doing it. How better to encourage bicyclists to protect their heads than to give them a hug and a free helmet? And when it's two cops handing out the hugs and helmets, people are going to pay attention.

There's been some talk on the interwebs about this being a "fake" viral video. I'm not sure what a fake viral video even is, but the concern seems to be that it was made by an advertising firm for The Danish Cyclists Federation. This is not hidden - there's a sponsor list at the end, and if anything, we should be encouraging coalitions between cities, cops and bicycle advocacy groups.

Do only men ride bikes in Denmark? Do the police only hug male cyclists?

Hey guys

We are a couple from Denmark visiting NYC and just wanted to tell you that THE VIDEO IS REAL. We know it might seem like a weird thing to do, but yeah, we come from a strange country :) So yes, let's hug people on bikes if that helps them not getting killed!!!
