Nonviolent direct action changes people. It changes those who participate, and it changes their opponents. Usually when we talk about this in a training, someone speaks up and says "Well, we're really not trying to change their minds, that's just not realistic." We use the Civil Rights movement as a model and inspiration in our work – regular people getting together to change the world. Some of those changes are reflected in laws, policies, and elections, but its effect is deeper than that. If you think you can't engage with your opponents in a way that brings them over to your side, watch this:
